TERRELL, Texas — A man was airlifted early Wednesday morning when his vehicle veered off the road, struck a tree and burst into flames on FM 148 near Davis Ln, according to firefighters.
The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department received the call about a vehicle fire at 5:30 a.m. Upon their arrival 10 minutes later, they found a vehicle heavily engulfed in flames. Witnesses reported that the vehicle had left the roadway at high speed and ignited upon impact with a tree.
Fortunately, quick-thinking passersby had managed to pull the driver to safety before the firefighters arrived, according to the TVFD.
Firefighters assessed the patient had suffered significant injuries and, coupled with the mechanism of injury, requested a standby CareFlite helicopter launch to the Terrell Municipal Airport. There, the man was flown to Methodist in Dallas.
While the patient was under the care of EMS, the firefighters began their fire attack. The fire was rapidly extinguished and overhauled, with Tanker 1 arriving to assist.
FM 148 remained closed until the fire was put out, after which traffic was allowed through one lane at a time until a wrecker arrived to remove the charred vehicle. All units cleared the scene by 8:05 a.m.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
